Healthy Routine for Seniors

It’s never too late for seniors to start a routine of healthy habits. Staying up-to-date with dental check-ups, medications, and physicals can make a difference in warding off illness.

Follow these 8 tips for living a healthier life today:

1. Healthy Eating

It’s important to eat a high-fiber diet full of fruits and vegetables because a senior’s digestive system slows down with age. Also, dehydration is common in seniors, so drinking plenty of water to stay healthy is necessary.

  • Eat a high fiber diet
  • Avoid dehydration

2. Prevention

Preventative care can help avoid illness in the long run. Seniors should stay up to date on health screenings for heart problems, colon cancer, and more. Having current vaccinations can help prevent pneumonia and influenza.

  • Get health screenings
  • Stay up-to-date on vaccinations

3. Sleep

Frequently waking up during the night and insomnia are common in seniors. Turning the lights down low in the evening and having a cool, comfortable, and quiet bedroom can help make falling asleep easier.

  • Turn down lights in evening
  • Maintain a cool, comfortable, and quiet bedroom

4. Mental Health

Crossword puzzles, reading, and writing can help maintain a healthy mind. Also, trying new hobbies can help with stimulation of the mind and engaging with the outside world. A combination of these activities can help in warding off mental illness.

  • Crossword puzzles help strengthen the mind
  • New hobbies are good for mental stimulation

5. Vision

Senior’s vision should be checked every year for changes in their prescription glasses and screened for other eye health issues. Having the proper prescription and healthy vision can prevent the risk of falling.

  • Vision should be checked every year
  • Proper vision prevents risk of falling

6. Socialization

Taking part in activities with others can help seniors keep their mind sharp. Also, spending time with family and loved ones helps seniors feel more connected and upbeat.

  • Spending time with family brings happiness

7. Exercise

Exercise has many benefits for the elderly, such as alleviating depression and improving energy and memory. An exercise program should be checked with a physician first. A healthy and active lifestyle can contribute to senior’s overall well-being.

  • Exercise is good for improving energy and memory

8. Dentist

The risk for cavities increases with age and mouth infections are linked to serious health conditions, such as stroke and diabetes. It’s important for seniors to see a dentist regularly to avoid these ailments.

  • Visit the dentist regularly
